A Long Way In 5 Years

Over the last couple weeks I’ve been working on some projects using some really old software.

By “really old,” I mean 2009.

As recently as 2009, at least one major e-commerce platform had yet to incorporate any mobile-ready capacity. Zero. Nada.

The original iPhone was released on June 29, 2007. The second iPhone (3G) was released on June 9, 2008.

The first iPhone competition, the Samsung Galaxy (GT-I7500), was released on April 27, 2009. It wasn’t really until 2010 that you started seeing “everybody” with a smartphone.

In 2010 the first iPad hit the market. Other tablets to compete with the iPad came along in 2011.

I’ll leave it to the social critics to argue about whether the “mobile revolution” is a good thing or a bad thing — or just a thing.

To me it’s an amazing thing that just 5 years ago nobody cared about what their website looked like on an iPhone screen. Now nobody who’s serious about launching a website dares not care.
