WordPress Automatic Update Works!

Last night WordPress released a security update. It was the first time they pushed an update to run on WordPress installations automatically.

I’ve been involved with a lot of WordPress installations over the years. Each time one of them automatically updated, I got an email from the installation letting me know that it had updated itself. That was cool. Very cool.

Normally I don’t want to be bothered with automatically generated email. Most of the time it’s spam. But each of these meant one less time I have to log into a site and run the update myself. That saved me a couple hours today. Those are hours I can spend doing real coding instead of maintenance.

It would be mighty nice if a lot of other CMS platforms did that. Hint, hint!

And, by the way, the next major WordPress update (3.9) is now officially scheduled for April 16.
